Tips
on Finding a
Contractor
If
you do not have the time to research a contractor you can let ServiceMagic.com
Help You
1.)
"Understanding what you need to have done".
When you decide to start a project it is always a good idea to have some
knowledge about what needs to be done. Lets just say you would like to install
new windows, it is a good idea to pick up a small book and read something
about window installation. This will give you a better understanding of what
kind of questions you might want to ask the contractor when he visits your
home. It will also give you a better understanding of what's happening when
the job is in progress. Even if you feel you
already know, there is always the possibility that you might have overlooked
something.
2) "Who is most qualified to do the work".
Once
you have an understanding of what the project is really about you need
to decide who would be most qualified to do the work.
For example: You
wouldn't hire a foot specialist to operate on your eyes. So why hire an
electrician to replace your roof. Skilled labor is exactly that. And getting
the right person to do the job is important. Sometimes paying a little extra
to get the person that's best could save you a lots of time and money in the
long run. And by understanding your project you will then have a better
understanding of who is best qualified to do the work.
3)
"Make a list of contractors".
You understand your project and you know what
you need. Now its time to list some contractors.Ohio
Contractors or ServiceMagic.com
is a
good place to start. Then check with friends, associations, referral
services, yellow pages and if you have used a good contractor in the past give
them a call to see who they know. Make your list and check it twice. Don't be
lazy and only write down 2 or 3 names. Treat yourself good make a healthy list
of at least 5 and better. Because most likely somebody wont return your call.
4)
"Checking the contractors on your list".
Call your local Consumer Affairs and check the licenses of each contractor.
But remember the laws are different from state to state and contractors in
your area might not have to be licensed for what your looking to have done.
But call anyway just to check. It only takes about 3 to 10 minutes to
check the first one and then about a minute or two to check each one after
that. You can do it all at once. You will need 1 or both of the following ---
The company name and address or the license number of the contractor. Remember
to have a pencil and paper handy.
When you are given the records on the phone (some places will even mail them
to you) be careful of those who have collected many complaints in a short
period of time or those who have not been in business very long it doesn't
mean they are no good it just means be careful.
Visit
the Consumer
Affairs and Better
Business Bureau Web Sites. No matter what anyone tells you about
finding a contractor to do the job, it is always recommended that you check
the contractors history in your local area. To many stories have been
told in the news and on TV. about people getting taken by scam artist. So
remember no matter what, never leave the homework to anyone else, unless they
will guarantee the work themselves.
